Book recommendation: A Call to Spiritual Reformation by D. A. Carson. In this study of the prayers of the Apostle Paul, Carson helps us see how our prayers can be transformed by the examples we find in the Bible.


1. We learn how to pray 1:9a

1a. We ought to link thanksgiving with our petitions

1b. We ought to pray consistently and intensely


2. We learn what to pray 1:9b


3. We learn why we pray 1:10-14

3a. That we might live worthy of the Lord 10

- Pleasing him

- Bearing fruit in every good work

- Increasing in the knowledge of God


3b. That we might be strengthened by the power of God 11

- So we can be hopeful in difficult circumstances

- So we can be helpful to difficult people


3c. That we might be have joyful thanksgiving for our salvation 12-14

- God has qualified us

- God has delivered us

- God has transferred us
