1.
For
Jesus, his glory and the cross are the same thing
2.
For
believers,
without a cross there is no following Jesus
Daily
taking up your cross is the intentional, ongoing,
love-driven, world-weaning choice to exalt and honor Christ,
doing the things that please him
while refusing to live for self.
This
is an
intentional practice.
It's
also an
ongoing practice.
It
is a love-driven practice.
It
is a world-weaning
practice.
12:25b; Col 3
3.
Without
following Jesus there is no life at all.
There
will be no life without death. This
is not a catchy Christian saying,
but a Biblical truth that calls
us to
serious personal investigation. To what kinds of exercises are you
giving
yourself that allow for careful looks at your own soul? To what
kinds of
activities do you give yourself that
might
dull your sensitivity to such things? To what dangers is one left if
one never
examines his or her own heart?
Contemplate
today's passage and discover promises and
comforts that are supplied for those who
will follow after Christ, even to the point of suffering.
What
evidences do
you see in yourself of a life that is not captured by satisfactions and
pleasures
of this
world? Are there clear points of attachment to which you should die?
What encouragements
do you have that God is
helping you make progress in this area?
Be
encouraged
when you have struggles or soul or when you shrink away from the pain
of taking up
your cross. The Lord Jesus
has gone before you and calls you, still, to follow.
