Confronting Idolatry with a Message of Hope
Acts 17:22-34


1.    We will confront idolatry in 2008.
    a.    An idol is any attachment of the heart in which we look to something created for that which only God can supply.

    b.    The paganism found in Athens is not terribly far from the attitudes that are on the upswing in 21st century America.

    c.    We may encounter opposition and insults just as Paul did.

    d.    We may see mixed results (vv. 32-34).

2.    We must confront idolatry with biblically informed methods.
    a.    Paul used existing forums to speak the truth.
Question:  In what settings have you best been able to discuss truth?  Are you moving into, creating, and drawing others into those settings?
    b.    Paul used reason.

    c.    Paul found points of contact.

3.    We must confront idolatry with a biblically informed message.
    a.    Creator (v. 24)

    b.    Sustainer (v. 25)

    c.    Ruler (vv. 26-28a)

    d.    Father (vv. 28b-29)

    e.    Judge
        i.    What is repentance?

        ii.    This man Jesus has been raised from the dead.

4.    Application
    a.    This is a message for pagan intellectuals.

    b.    This is a message for Christians.
