A
God-Centered Reaction to Idols
Acts 17:15-21
1. Introduction – Paul in
Athens
Because idols are a pervasive, present reality...
2. We should be prepared to identify them.
a. Idolatry – what is it? An idol can be a good thing elevated to
a place it has no right to be.
b. If we were to walk around Auburn and Opelika, what sort of
idolatry would we see?
3. We should be provoked by their presence.
a. "was provoked" – moved to anger or action
b. When we see idolatry in our own hearts or around us, we should
be provoked for the same reasons as Paul was (corresponding to two
greatest commandments):
i. the glory of God was at stake
ii. people’s lives were frustrated and perverted
c. No guilt-driven evangelism here!
d. We must avoid compartmentalizing our thinking and our lives.
4. We should respond with biblical methods and a biblical message.
a. Method
i. truth
ii. using existing forums
b. Message – Jesus and the resurrection
i. idolaters need to know that God is offended by idolatry, and
he will judge all idolatry at the resurrection of the dead. Idolaters
need to repent of their idolatry!
ii. idolaters need to know that Jesus has triumphed over
idolatry.
iii. Jesus has demonstrated that there is a better alternative
to idols
