The Anointing of Jesus
Mark 14:1-11
Some background on anointing:
In the Bible anointing with oil or perfumes is a particular honor for people or things.
Honored Guests:
Psalm 23:5 You prepare a
table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with
oil;
my cup overflows.
Kings:
1 Kings 1:39 There Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!”
1 Samuel 16:13 (King David) 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
Prophets:
1 Kings 19:16 16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place.
Priests:
Leviticus 8:12 12 And he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron's head and anointed him to consecrate him.
Anointing usually means two things:
1) Sets a person apart as holy and consecrated
2) It confers authority on a person who is anointed
1. Trust precedes appropriate service of the King.
2. Extravagance characterizes appropriate service of the King.
It is very costly.
