Mark 3:7-19

The Advance of Jesus’ Mission: Do You Get It?

Where does the book of Mark fit into the big picture of the Bible?  Think about God’s work in two parts: Redemption Accomplished and Redemption Applied.

Genesis 3:15; 49:8-12

Sinclair Ferguson calls the entire Bible a ‘footnote to Genesis 3:15’.  See the development of God’s promise to crush the serpent’s head in the following:

Numbers 24:17-19; Deuteronomy 18:18-19; 2 Samuel 7:8-16

In Messianic Psalms:

2:2; 16; 22; 45; 72

Particularly in Isaiah:

7; 9:1-7, 11; and chapters 40-55 where we see pictures of:

The Great Prophet, who will teach his people.

The Great Priest, who will provide forgiveness for God’s people.

The Great Warrior King, who will release captives and set the prisoners free.  (Luke 4:16-21)

This shines a light on Mark 1:14-15

What kingdom is Jesus overcoming?  The kingdom of Rome?

One evidence of Jesus’ kingly rule is that the Gospel has spread to Auburn and Opelika Alabama, the ends of the earth from Jerusalem.  We submit to this kingly rule even as we participate in the supper of the Lamb of God who sits on the throne.  One day the rule of Christ will be clearly seen by all.  Until then we are to live out this kingdom in our lives by the way we walk and in the way we participate in the continuing spread of Christ’s kingdom by carrying the Gospel to others.  This is Redemption being applied.  Do you get it?

An Introduction to the Law

"The man who does not know the nature of the law cannot know the nature of sin. And he who does not know the nature of sin cannot know the nature of the Saviour." John Bunyan

Of what use is the law today?

1. We must make proper distinctions to understand the Bible's use of "law".

a. Scripture uses the term "law" in different ways.

b. Scripture makes an important threefold distinction.

i. moral law – law that is grounded in the nature of God as it relates to his creation and written on the hearts of all men.

ii. ceremonial law – law given in specific circumstances to mark off a particular people, to be a shadow of spiritual things, and to bring order to the worship of God. This law was fulfilled in the work of Christ.

iii. judicial (or civil) law – law given by Moses for the government of Israel and the maintenance of external order and propriety.

c. Scripture speaks very differently of the role of the law in justification and sanctification.

2. The moral law has a number of important uses. Rom. 7:5--8:4.

a. The law is a standard of righteousness to all men.

b. The law awakens the conscience of unbelievers and shows them their desperate condition apart from the work of Christ.

c. The law shows the believer his continuing need for the work of Christ .

3. Christ has come to conform us to the law of God.

a. Every believer experiences the agony of remaining sin.

b. The gospel is about sanctification as well as justification.
