Where does the book of Mark fit into the big picture of the Bible? Think about God’s work in two parts: Redemption Accomplished and Redemption Applied.

Sinclair Ferguson calls the entire Bible a ‘footnote to Genesis 3:15’. See the development of God’s promise to crush the serpent’s head in the following:

In Messianic Psalms:

An Introduction to the Law
"The man who does not know the nature of the law cannot know the nature of sin. And he who does not know the nature of sin cannot know the nature of the Saviour." John Bunyan
Of what use is the law today?
1. We must make proper distinctions to understand the Bible's use of "law".
a. Scripture uses the term "law" in different ways.
b. Scripture makes an important threefold distinction.
i. moral law – law that is grounded in the nature of God as it relates to his creation and written on the hearts of all men.
ii. ceremonial law – law given in specific circumstances to mark off a particular people, to be a shadow of spiritual things, and to bring order to the worship of God. This law was fulfilled in the work of Christ.
iii. judicial (or civil) law – law given by Moses for the government of Israel and the maintenance of external order and propriety.
c. Scripture speaks very differently of the role of the law in justification and sanctification.
2. The moral law has a number of important uses. Rom. 7:5--8:4.
a. The law is a standard of righteousness to all men.
b. The law awakens the conscience of unbelievers and shows them their desperate condition apart from the work of Christ.
c. The law shows the believer his continuing need for the work of Christ .
3. Christ has come to conform us to the law of God.
a. Every believer experiences the agony of remaining sin.
b. The gospel is about sanctification as well as justification.
