Humble Beginnings but a Glorious Finale
Haggai 2
God in his mercy had begun to restore a remnant of the people back to the land after a period of exile, but they had failed to rebuild the temple, showing that their luxury and comforts and busyness were more important to them than the Lord. Under Haggai’s prophetic ministry, they had repented of their misplaced desires and had begun to rebuild the temple. Haggai then brings a message of encouragement to them from the Lord.
1. Labors done with the Lord’s presence are eternally significant.
God assures them with two very powerful assurances:
a) "Work, for I am with you, declares the Lord of hosts."
b) Their present effort would lay the foundation for the future glory of the house of God.
Implications:
Building the church is the new covenant equivalent of building the temple.
When you do ordinary things to the glory of God, you’re doing something significant.
2. Defiled character drains the significance from everyday life.
a) Sometimes God brings suffering and disappointments into our lives to bring our attention to our sin and coldness toward him.
b) God must break through by stirring our spirits.
3. God’s glory and our significance unite in Christ and his presence.
a) Zerubbabel as the governor of Judah was the representative of the people of God.
b) Zerubbabel as the descendent of David was the representative of Christ.
Applications:
Haggai encourages us to be strong and work for the building up of the church.
Independent attempts to find significance will be of no value, but God can take even our feeble, weak obedience and establish it as significant before him.
