Gospel Motives for Sanctification
I. We must recognize and cherish by faith God's pleasure in our obedience.
Our obedience is partial and limited; therefore, we often feel that God never finds pleasure in our obedience.
But (modernized BCF):
Nevertheless, since believers as to their persons are accepted by God through Christ, their works also are accepted as being wrought in Christ. Not as though they were, during this life, beyond reproach and unreprovable in the sight of God, but that, as He looks upon them in His Son, he is pleased to accept and reward that which is sincere, even though it is accompanied by many weaknesses and imperfections.
I Pet. 2:5 -- "You also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ."
1 Chron. 29:5b-9
It is easier to obey in front of others; we're wired that way. We have a perfectly attentive, completely holy God as our audience, who has an infinite capacity for pleasure.
II. Scriptural motives to combat anxiety
What is the root of anxiety? Matt. 6:25-34, esp. 30.
Sources of anxiety will come. The important thing is how we respond to these. I Pet. 5:7
Matt. 6:25-34 -- what are the motivations for dealing with anxiety?
* risk -- Isaiah 41:10
* weakness -- 2 Cor. 12:9
* decision-making -- Ps. 32:8
* opposition -- Rom. 8:31
** loss for Christ's sake -- Mark 10:29-30
* sickness -- Ps. 34:19
* death -- Rom. 14:7-9
These promises must become a part of our thinking by meditation, prayer, actings of faith, and consistent obedience. These promises are not talismans that we wear around our necks to ward off evil spirits.
