Sanctification by Faith
I. Sanctification, like justification, is by faith. Gal. 3:1-5. How so?
A. We trust what Christ has done to lay the foundation for our sanctification:
* crucified with Christ
* sent the Holy Spirit
* ascension to the right hand of God to intercede
B. We look expectantly to Christ to give us grace for the present and future:
* Christ intercedes
* Christ is with us through the Holy Spirit
* Christ gives us great promises to satisfy our deepest longings and warnings to protect us from danger
II. Faith prizes the superior worth of all that God is and promises to be for us in Jesus.
* Gen. 3:1-5 -- Satan's lie
* Rom. 8:32 -- God's radical commitment to our best
* Heb. 11:8-10,13-16,32-40 -- the example of trust in God's goodness
III. Gospel motives are stronger than legal motives.
* Rom. 8:3, 6:14
IV . We must learn to stir up our affections with Scriptural motivations.
The assumption here is that our hearts have been renewed by the Holy Spirit and that there are some affections to be stirred up! [change from barge to sailboat, from dog to horse]
We must tantalize (stir up) our God-given desires with the prospect of satisfaction. See Matt. 5:6 and context. (food analogy)
V. We must recognize and cherish by faith God's pleasure in our obedience.
Our obedience is partial and limited; therefore, we often feel that God never finds pleasure in our obedience. But see Hb. 13:21
"God has a very big heart and very high standards; he is easy to please and hard to satisfy."
