Sermon Outline

1 Corinthians 5

Purity Before God

1.  The Situation: Arrogance displaces humility (1, 2)

            The Corinthians had forgotten three things:

            1.  Sin in the body of Christ brings shame on the body of Christ.

            2.  We have a responsibility to each other.

3.  Our response is to be characterized by mourning.

2.  The Solution

           2A.  Remove the person from membership… (3-5)

            So he might be restored.

2B.  Press after consistent holiness… (6-8)

To have lives of sincerity and truth.

2C.  Judge the church, not the world (9-13)

To send a consistent message to both.

Bible Study Outline

Sanctification -- God's Role and Ours

We struggle with these extremes -- "You're on your own" or "Let go and let God."

I. Sanctification is a work of God

Each member of the Trinity has a role:

A. Father -- (purposes) Rom. 8:29; (disciplines) Heb. 12:9-10

B. Son -- (died) Eph. 5:25-27; (intercedes) Heb. 4:14-16.

C. Holy Spirit -- sanctification is especially the work of the Holy Spirit. 2 Thes. 2:13. (gives us new desires & produces fruit) Gal. 5:16-17,22; (directs, enables us to defeat sin) Rom. 8:9-14, (renews us) Titus 3:5

All members of the Trinity are united in their purpose.

II. Sanctification requires our responsible participation

Some have so emphasized the role of faith in sanctification that they have redefined the believer's role as simply a passive trusting. However, the biblical view is that our exercise of faith should be an active trusting! (James 2:18 -- "But someone may say, `You have faith, and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.'")

* Rom. 12:1-2

* Heb. 12:14

* Eph. 6:11-13

* Phil. 3:12-14

* I Cor. 9:24-27

III. How do we put these together?

Two dangerous errors:

* "Because God must work, I cannot."

* "Because I must work, God cannot be working."

Cooperation?

The biblical view -- "Because God works, we work."  Phil. 2:12-13

How should we acknowledge God in our pursuit of holiness so that we do not fall into dead works?

* look to God for grace and trust his provision and promises

* pray

* heed his warnings
