The Experience of Sanctification -- "The Agony of Victory"
I. 2 Pet. 1:1-11
A. Peter’s prayer is that grace and peace would be multiplied to us. he foundation he describes for growing in grace is knowledge of God and God’s power.
B. How is it possible to grow?
- because God has provided everything we need – at conversion!
- because the slavery to corruption has already been broken – the key escape (v. 4)!
C. Growth happens in response to effort on our part (v. 5).
D. What is the foundational quality we’re to build on? How do we obtain it?
- God gives it as we respond to his promises in salvation.
- all growth flows out of this – we look to Christ:
* because of his decisive work on the cross
* because he has given us the Spirit
* because he promises moment-by-moment grace to overcome – Heb. 4:14-16, I Cor. 10:13
E. Does Peter lead us to expect leaps of growth or a gradual process?
* vv. 5-8 -- indicates that growth will come by building on the foundation element-by-element, not by an all-at-once leap. This is the way of fruitfulness and usefulness.
F. Look at the elements:
i. Moral excellence/ virtue – partakers of God & his excellence (v. 3)
ii. Knowledge – general knowledge of living flowing out of specific knowledge of God.
iii. Self-control – applying knowledge to keep the body under control
iv. Perseverance/steadfastness – continuing habitually in the path of obedience, even in the face of trials and persecution
v. Godliness – reflecting God and his provision in the process of perseverance
vi. Brotherly affection – a God-centered obedience will lead us to appreciate and esteem other believers
vii. Love – the crowning fruit of the Spirit. Love for all, not just believers.
G. vv. 10-11 -- this is the way to confirm our election! This is the way that leads to entering the eternal kingdom. Do what elect people do, and you will discover that you are elect.
II. No post-conversion crisis experience is commanded (or commended or promised or suggested).
III. The Christian life is described as a struggle.
A. Rom. 7:14-25 -- this is a part of the Christian experience. Not "get out of Romans 7 and into Romans 8."
B. I John 1:6-10 -- we sometimes sin even as we are walking in fellowship with God.
IV. Victory is the experience of all Christians (I Jn. 5:4):
* imperfect but real now
* progressive
* perfect victory assured
Rom. 8:37
I Cor. 15:56-58
Let us get on with the hard work of sanctification, looking to the Holy Spirit for grace to persevere but taking responsibility for action.
