Sermon Outline

Salvation by Faith Alone

Ephesians 2:8-10

The doctrine of justification by faith alone “is the head and the cornerstone.  It alone begets, nourishes, builds, preserves, and defends the church of God; and without it the church of God cannot exist for one hour.”  Martin Luther

1.  Saving Faith Must Have a Right Object

2.  Saving Faith Must Submit to the Truth of the Gospel

3.  Saving Faith Must Embrace Jesus Christ

You will not shrink from that which tests the genuineness of your faith.

You will find yourself with an increasing joy over the presence of Christ.

4.  Saving Faith Excludes all Human Boasting  (9)

Because everything I bring to the table is like rubbish, only worse.

Because God will share his glory with no one else.

5.  Saving Faith Always Produces Good Works  (10)

Those which are done out of true faith  Romans 14:20-23

Those things that are in accordance with God’s law.

Those things done for God’s glory.  1 Co 10:31,

Not based on my own opinions or the traditions of men.

Practical Considerations:

  • Do you have an understanding of the Person and work of Christ?  Can you explain it to someone else?
  • Do you submit to the truth of the Gospel revealed in the Scriptures?  How should we respond to those parts that seem difficult or hard to understand?
  • How does difficulty affect your relationship to Christ?  Do you know a sense of joy that goes beyond anything this physical world can provide?
  • To what does your testimony point others, your own past life and personal decisions, or the work of Christ on your behalf?
  • What fruit of saving faith have you seen in your life in the recent past?  What practical actions demonstrate a love for Christ?  What practical actions demonstrate a love for your neighbor?
