Dec 26 2004 AM Worship Sermon The Majesty of the Messiah (Hebrews 1:3) Paul Stith

Sermon Outline

Jesus, My Priest

Hebrews 1:3 et. al.

The Majesty of Christ - Jesus, My King

Jesus speaks of a kingdom not from this world (John 18:36), one that has been prepared for his people by the Father from the foundation of the world (Matt 25:34).  He has opened this kingdom for us by his own death (Heb 2:9) and brings to God blessing and honor and glory (Rev 5:13).  We are to obey his commands until he returns (1 Tim 6:15) for we are his subjects (Rev 17:14; 19:16).  He has been placed by God over all rule and authority and power and dominion.  God has put all things under his feet and given to him the church of which he is the head (Eph 1:20-23; 5:23).  He has been given the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

1.  The Right of Christ to be our King  Hebrews 1:3

1a.  He is the unveiling of the glory of God 3a

The Son causes the radiance of the Father to shine forth.

1b.  He is the imprint of the glory of God 3b

God himself stamped upon his Son the divine imprint of his being.  [Kistemaker, p. 30]

1c.  He is the ruler of the universe 3c

Well does Simon Kistemaker say, Christ, the ruler of the universe, utters a word, and all things listen in obedience to his voice.  No other motions are necessary, for the spoken word is sufficient. [Hebrews, p. 30]  This authority makes Christ worthy as our king.  But there is one other proof:

1d.  He has been appointed by God 3e

2.  The Role of Christ as our King

            2a.  He dispenses Mercy

God created and redeemed the world so that he might make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he prepared beforehand for glory (Rom 9:23).  Piper says the universe exists primarily to display the wealth of the glory of the mercy of God for the enjoyment of his redeemed people from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.  [Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ, p. 84]

2b.  He will also dispense judgment

            2c.  He Will Reign forever

            See Rev 5:9-14
