Sermon Outline

James 1:19-21

Hearing the Word

1.  Keys to hearing the Word (19, 20)

1a.  We must be ready to hear

                        Learn to develop listening skills

Learn to develop attentiveness in your Bible reading.  Listen for what is being said.

Understand that this is a supernatural event, and cannot be programmed.

                        Make proper preparation for worship.

1b.  We must be slow to speak

Practice the discipline of being quiet.

Memorize Scripture that deals with the tongue.  Start with Matt 12:36, 37

1c.  We must be slow to anger

What most often makes me angry and why?

What sin does that reveal in my heart (if it is sinful anger)?

2.  Keys to receiving the Word (21)

2a.  What are we receiving and why does it matter?

            2b.  Proper Preparation

            2c.  The Proper Attitude

Broader Application Questions:

1.  Do you understand and long for the process of Biblical Sanctification?

2.  If yes (to #1) what does your Bible Reading say about this?  Put Bible reading on a schedule.

3.  How does our culture cause deterioration in listening, quietness, and meekness?

4.  What are some things you can do to prepare for situations that make you angry?

5.  What is wrong with laying the blame for anger producing situations at the feet of others?

6.  Why might we be unwilling to apply Gods truths to everyday life issues?
