Bible Study Outline
We must preach to our hearts stir our affections by holding up the truth before our hearts so that we are filled with biblical motivations to pursue our joy in Christ.
I. The Holy Spirit is the energizer.
A. Only by the regenerating and sanctifying work of the Spirit will we find pleasure in God. I Peter 4:3-4.
B. The Holy Spirit works directly on our desires. Rom. 8:1-9, Phil. 2:13.
C. The Holy Spirit works through the truth. Jn. 16:13.
D. The Holy Spirit works through prayer. Ps. 51:10-13.
II. We must learn to stir up our affections with Scriptural motivations.
A. The assumption here is that our hearts have been renewed by the Holy Spirit and that there are some affections to be stirred up!
B. We must tantalize (stir up) our God-given desires with the prospect of satisfaction. See Matt. 5:6 and context. We must learn to present truth to our inner desires so that our desires will react to the truth and motivate us to pursue righteousness. This involves meditation, prayer, and Scripture memorization.
C. What is the source of this prospect? The teaching of Scripture.
D. We must pray for God's help.
