DESIRING GOD

Introduction

1.  The desire for pleasure is God-given.

  • God's threat in paradise.
  • 10 Commandments -- rewards and punishments
  • Beatitudes  Jesus didn't say "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for there is nothing in it for them."
  • 2nd greatest commandment assumes we have our own best interest at heart.

2.  We should work with this natural motivation rather than against it, as the Scriptures do.

3.  God has the right to define proper motives as well as proper behavior.

  • "You shall not covet."
  • Sermon on the Mount.
  • Rom. 12:8
  • 2 Cor. 9:7

4.  God has commanded that we seek pleasure in him. Ps. 37:4, Ps. 98:4

God only commands us to recognize the truth Ultimate pleasure is found in the enjoyment of God. See Ps. 16:11

5.  God delights to be the source of our highest pleasure. Ps. 37:23
