The Blessings of a Christian Home, Part 3

A word of encouragement to Children and their Parents

Ephesians 6:1-4

Remember the Context in which Paul was writing:

            1.  The Roman Fathers Power

            2.  The Choice of the Father

            3.  Ancient civilization was merciless to the sickly

1.  A Word of Encouragement for Children

The apostle assumes that among those who will be listening when this letter is read to the various congregations the children will not be lacking.  [Hendriksen, Galatians and Ephesians, p. 258]

            1a.  The Command

            1b.  The Motive

            1c.  The Consequences

Virtually no home is more damaging to children than a nominal Christian home.  Consequently, here is:

2.  A Word of Encouragement for Parents

2a.  Learn what provokes children to wrath

                        2a1.  Overprotection

                        2a2.  Overindulgence

                        2a3.  Favoritism

                        2a4.  Discouragement

                        2a5.  Condescension

                        2a6.  Neglect

                        2a7.  Bitter words

                        2a8.  Unreasonable demands

                        2a9.  Physical cruelty

2b.  Learn how to provoke your children to love and good works.

A change in behavior that does not stem from a change in the heart is not commendable, but condemnable.  Tedd Tripp

The very heart of Christian nurture is this: to bring the heart of the child to the heart of his Savior.  [Hendriksen, p. 263]

Rich Young Ruler

(Matt 19:16-22, Mark 10:17-22, Luke 18:18-23)

What was he (the rich, young ruler) right about?

1. He was right to be urgently concerned about the important issue of how

    to inherit   eternal   life.

2. He was right to approach  Jesus   without being concerned about what

    other people may think.

4. He was right to come directly to  Jesus  , the one person who was (and

is) the foremost authority on the question of eternal life.

3. He was right about   Jesus  being both good and a teacher.

What was he wrong about?

1. He was wrong to think that   Jesus   was just one of many good teachers.

2. He was wrong to assume that  eternal life  is some sort of formula.

But, instead, it is a personal relationship and total dependence on  Jesus  .

3. He was wrong to think that   eternal life   could be earned by

doing good works or by keeping the ten commandments.

4. He was wrong (for an eternity) to turn away from   Jesus , the only true source

    of life, abundant and eternal.
