Esau: The Danger of Living for the Moment

Gen. 25:21-34

We live in a day that seems to expect instant gratification. We can't put up with being told to wait on something. There is great danger in being unable to wait to have our desires fulfilled.

Esau was a man who lived for the moment. To him, the birthright seemed far off and shadowy and hard to grasp. He allowed an intense feeling of the moment to cloud his vision of something much bigger but further off.

Do you find yourself tempted like Esau? The most tragic form this temptation can take is when we forsake Christ and his gospel for the desires of the moment.  How on earth can we fight against the temptations of the moment with something so far off and shadowy?  Let me suggest five ways:

  • Ephesians 1:14 -- we have the Holy Spirit as a down payment of the inheritance. That is important in two ways:

a down payment helps the whole thing seem real and believable.

The Holy Spirit actively helps us to enter into the reality of our inheritance (John 14:16-20)

This is all the equipment we need to fight against the temptation of instant gratification. We already have the down payment.

  • Colossians 3:1-3 -- we must magnify that which is far off and shadowy by meditating on its reality. Notice in this passage that our life is already there with Christ. We simply need to be reminded. Likewise, we need to minimize that which is nearby but fleeting. See Hebrews 11.
  • Psalm 66:5-6 -- we must remember and recount God's blessings and mercies that we have already experienced as tokens of what is to come.
  • Spiritual disciplines, especially prayer -- each time we discipline ourselves, we exercise the "spiritual muscles" that strengthen us to choose the bigger, delayed blessing over instant gratification.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:16 -- The Lord's supper
