Sermon Outline

Jesus Reception of Sinners

Luke 15:20-24

There is a sense in which we can sometimes feel:

            1.  A great way off from putting sin to death

            2.  A great way off from the knowledge of God and biblical truth

            3.  A great way off from faith that trusts God in every circumstance

            4.  A great way off in loving Christ and others as we should

            5.  A great way off from assurance, trembling with hope that our sins are forgiven

Certainly, we should not find false hope in just our longings to be better.  We must not be content to rest here but to press on toward Christ and his calling in our lives.  But what confidence do we have about the way we sinners will be received when we come to Christ?

1.  The longings of your heart are well known.

2.  Your request for forgiveness and help will be received.

3.  Your request for forgiveness will be received unconditionally.

4.  Your request for forgiveness will be fulfilled completely.

5.  Your request for forgiveness will be met with rejoicing.

Nothing in all the attributes of God argues with a repenting sinner.   ~  Charles Spurgeon

By way of application:

1.  Are you forgiving others as you have been forgiven?

2.  Are you repenting when you have sinned against others?

3.  Are you holding forth this precious offer to others who are far off from Christ?

4.  Do you rejoice with those who repent?
